The Tranquil Oasis of Agdal Gardens, in Marrakesh

Situated south of the Medina, away amidst the bustling streets of Marrakesh, lies a serene haven known as the Agdal Gardens.

Dating back to the 12th century, these expansive gardens were commissioned by the Almohad caliphs, just like the Menara Gardens. The name “Agdal” comes from the Berber word for “walled meadow,” reflecting the enclosed nature of the gardens.

What to See in Agdal Gardens

The gardens are enclosed within a walled perimeter, giving them a sense of seclusion and tranquility amidst the bustling city. The walls not only provide privacy but also serve to protect the gardens and their precious flora.

Even though they cover 500 hectares, only a part is accessible to the public since they back onto the Royal Palace, which is still in use.

Anyway, as you step into the gardens, you’ll be greeted by a symphony of sights and scents. These gardens are meticulously landscaped, featuring lush greenery and extensive citrus orchards. You can find also roses, palms, cypress, and other plants native to the region. All these plantings create a visually stunning landscape that changes with the seasons.

However, the most iconic feature of the Agdal Gardens is the vast man-made reservoir, known as the Agdal Basin. Built to irrigate the gardens and surrounding farmland, this ancient water system is a marvel of engineering of those who lived in the past – the water comes from the Ourika Valley and the Atlas Mountains. Today, it provides a stunning backdrop for leisurely walks and quiet contemplation.

What are the difference between Agdal Gardens, Menara Gardens and Jardin Majorelle?

Some of you may wonder if all gardens in Marrakesh are the same. Absolutely not.

Each one offers a different atmosphere, although Adgal and Menara have many commonalities, such as the presence of a water pool and manicured vegetation. However, the centerpiece of the Menara Gardens is the Menara Pavilion, while Agdal has nothing similar. At the same time, Agdal Gardens look more like a grove while Jardin Majorelle is so manicured that it almost looks like an art exhibition.

If you’re staying in the Medina, you can reach the gardens by taxi, which offers a convenient and hassle-free journey. Alternatively, for a more adventurous experience, consider renting a bicycle and pedaling your way through the city streets.

Once you arrive, admission to the Gardens is typically included in the ticket price for nearby attractions such as the Royal Palace or the Menara Gardens.
