Villa Carlotta: A Historical Masterpiece
Originally named Villa Clerici, Villa Carlotta was built in 1690 by Marquis Giorgio II Clerici. In 1801, the villa passed to Gian Battista Sommariva, a politician and art collector, who modified the villa’s interiors, enriching them with works that made the villa known throughout Europe, attracting the likes of Stendhal and Flaubert. In 1843 the villa was purchased by Princess Marianne of Orange-Nassau, wife of Prince Albert of Prussia, who four years later gave it to her daughter Charlotte (Carlotta, in Italian), after whom it was named, for her wedding.
During and after the First World War, the villa faced over a decade of difficulties. In 1927, it was placed under the management of a dedicated institution, which still oversees it today.

The Art Collection
Villa Carlotta houses an impressive collection of neoclassical sculptures and paintings, including works by Antonio Canova, Bertel Thorvaldsen, and Francesco Hayez. One room is entirely dedicated to a collection of late 18th-century tapestries.
Most of the artwork is displayed on the lower floor, while the upper floor gives an idea of the villa’s residential use and houses an elegant gallery.
The Botanical Garden
The true highlight of Villa Carlotta is its vast botanical garden, covering more than 20 acres. This terraced garden is home to more than 500 species of plants, including citrus trees, camellias, azaleas, tropical plants, palms, cedars, bamboos, and even century-old conifers. Visitors can walk along nature trails, enjoying the seasonal blooms and glimpses of Lake Como.
The greenhouse, once used in winter to grow citrus trees, has now been converted into a museum showcasing ancient agricultural tools.

Villa Carlotta is located on the western shores of Lake Como, in Tremezzo, and it is easily accessible from the surrounding towns and cities. For instance, from Como, you can take a ferry to Tremezzo, offering scenic views along the way. If you are traveling by car, you can follow the SS340 road along the lake, though parking near the villa can be limited during peak tourist seasons.
